Megalithic Culture of Bangladesh

megalith is a large stone that has been used to construct a structure or monument, either alone or together with other stones. Megalithic describes structures made of such large stones, utilizing an interlocking system without the use of mortar or cement.
Historically Janintapur of Bangladesh is known of Megalithic culture to the archeologist, historian and researchers. It is located in the southern foothill of the Jainta hills of Assam in eastern India is at present part of sylhet in Bangladesh. Situated at sylhet Tamabil road. The palace is 40 km north of sylhet town and now the Upzila of Jaintapur of sylhet district. The ancient history of sylhet is obscure. The purana Tantric literature and the Mahabharata mention about the kingdom of Jainta. There controversies regarding the origin and arrival of Jainta people. Some scholars speak out that in ancient times, a section of the Austric people Known as tsing-taing or tsin-tien or synteng and later, a group of people known as Jainta or Khasia or Kna-chai migrated to Jainta and Khasi Hills from china and established kindom there.Remain of Jaintaswari temples stand at a little distance from the place premise. Apart from these remains there are some megalithic at Jaintapur. These megalithics are grouped in three different areas of this area
Megaliths of Jaintapur are two types: one is dolmen and other menhir. Dolmens are single, flat slabs of stone placed over some upright smaller stones or legs usually 4 in number which are 70cm to1 m high above the ground. This flat slab is called table-stone or ‘capstone’ usually these slabs are 20 cm to 40 cm thick and most of them are rectangular in shape. The rest two are almost squares, one is roundish, one is elliptical and one is irregular in shape. Almost behind each dolmen has a big erect stone called Menhir. It is usually in height from 4m to 5m. But a few of them stand as high as 6 to 7 m. they are 40 cm to 1m wide and 10 to 30 cm thick and in most cases their cross-section is oblong. Every menhir gradually narrows towards a flat top. Finally it should mention that our glorious culture and heritage need extar care and protection for our future genarations.
